We aim to make Chrome the fastest browser possible. One way V8 helps with this goal is by compiling JavaScript into native machine code to execute scripts quickly. Historically, Chrome compiled JavaScript on the main thread, where it could interfere with the performance of the JavaScript application. In the latest Chrome Beta we've enabled concurrent compilation, which offloads a large part of the optimizing compilation phase to a background thread. The result is that JavaScript applications remain responsive and performance gets a boost.

Let's have a look under the hood of V8 to understand how this works. To reduce the overall time spent compiling, V8 defers compilation of JavaScript functions until immediately before they are executed the first time. This compilation phase is fast but doesn't focus on optimizing the code, just on getting it don e quickly. In V8, pieces of code that are executed very often are compiled a second time by a specialized optimizing compiler. This second compilation pass makes use of many advanced optimization techniques, meaning it takes more time than the first pass but delivers much faster code.

Until now, V8 took turns compiling optimized Javascript code and executing it. For large pieces of code this could become a nuisance, and in complex applications like games it could even lead to stuttering and dropped frames. Concurrent compilation tackles this issue.

The graphs below show excerpts of V8's vital signs when running Mandreel, part of the Octane benchmark suite, on the Nexus 5 phone. The graphs have been created using our new profiling visualization tool. The black bar represents execution of JavaScript, and ideally would be solid.

The first graph shows V8 running without concurrent compilation. V8 is fully occupied with optimizing a large piece of code, causing an execution pause of more than 600ms.

By enabling concurrent compilation, V8 still optimizes a large piece of code, but does it in a background thread. Execution continues alongside compilation, providing for a smoother user experience. For in stance, concurrent compilation improved the Mandreel score of Octane 2.0 by 27% on a Nexus 5 and made graphic-intensive applications such as the Epic Citadel Demo run even smoother in Chrome.

Concurrent code compilation is another step towards reducing latency in Chrome and is part of various ongoing efforts to deliver more responsive, smoother web applications.

Chrome_reset_thong_bao.

feedly

Millions of Chrome users place their trust in the hands of extension developers. But what happens when add-ons are sold to a new owner?
In what sounds like the paranoid conspiracy theory of an anti-Google shill, some popular Chrome extensions are reportedly being bought up by pedlars of malware looking for a fast way to infect thousands of users at once.
This is precisely what happened to one of Chrome's most popular* third-party Feedly extensions.

'Four figure sum for an hours work'

The developer of the 'Add to Feedly' extension, Amit Agarwal, says that he was approached o ut of the blue by a (mysterious, un-Googleable) individual wanting to buy his add-on.
"It was a 4-figure offer for something that had taken an hour to create and I agreed to the deal," explains Amit on his blog.
Such an offer would tempt most of us. But in pocketing the money, and transferring ownership to another party, Amit also sold the trust of the 30,000+ users who had chosen to install it.
Just a few short months after completing the deal the new add-on owners issued their first, and thus far only, update. One that added an unwelcome new 'feature': adware.
Google updates Chrome extensions silently in the background, meaning the majority of users would have been unaware that the spammy links, pop-up ads, and intrusive affiliate code embeds suddenly affecting each and every site they visited were the fault of their dependable Feedly add-on.
Those that were able to narrow it down soon took to the Chrome Web S tore to vent their disappoint, which is how Amit first became aware of the issue.
In a galling twist, a switch to turn "off" advertisements was included with the update but, according to user reports, is nothing more than a dummy. Whether on or off, unwanted adverts continue to show up.

'Shady Practice'

But is this an isolated incident? It seems not.
Tech reporter Ron Adameo found himself experiencing the brutish reality of an ad-injecting add-on update, transforming a once-handy Twitter tool into an "ad-injecting machine" that hijacked his every Google search.
As Google Chrome grows in popularity it's probable that these sorts of shady, underhanded practices will increase along side it.
* We've chosen not to include a link to the add-on at the centre of this article.

Google Chrome's new 'New Tab page' finishes rolling out to everyone today – but what happens if you don't like the new look? Is it possible to 'turn it off'?
Thankfully it is. In this post I'll show you how to restore it without the need to add extensions or fiddle around with bookmarks.

Switch Back to Old Chrome New Tab page

1. Open a new tab in Google Chrome
2. Copy and paste the following into the Chrome omnibox (the URL bar) and hit enter:
3. Turn off the 'Instant Extended API'  by clicking the drop-down menu and selecting the 'Disable' option.
4. Click the 'Relaunch Chrome' button that appears towards the bottom of the window.
You should now see the familiar giant speed dial of the pre-change New Tab Page:

Notes

Google may remove or disable the option to 'switch off' the latest version of the NTP at some point in the future. So far there's nothing to suggest that they will do this but the chance remains.

More and more, we're using our phones and tablets to discover great web content from all over the world. Today, a few new features in Chrome for Mobile make it easier for you to find and consume this content on the go.

Data compression for Android and iOS

In the U.S. alone, more than a fifth of adult smartphone users now do most of their online browsing on their mobile device.1 Around the world, we're seeing a similar trend towards more mobile browsing. That's why we'll be rolling out a new feature on Chrome for Mobile to help you reduce data usage and save money on your mobile plan. When enabled, Chrome's data compression and bandwidth management can reduce data usage by up to 50% while browsing the web on Chrome for Android and iOS. This feature also enables Chrome's Safe Browsing technology which helps protect you from malicious webpages.

To start saving data and turn on an even more secure browsing experience, visit "Settings" > "Bandwidth management" > "Reduce data usage." Then simply turn the toggle to "On." From this menu, you'll also be able to track how much bandwidth you save each month as you browse on Chrome.

Translate for iOS

Parlez-vous français? Not to worry. We heard your requests and will be introducing Google Translate in Chrome for iOS in the coming days. W ith this update, you can now translate webpages in Chrome with the click of a button on your iPhone and iPad, just as you're used to on Chrome for desktop and Android. To translate a page into your phone or tablet's native language, just look for the translation bar and select "Translate."

Application shortcuts on Android

Lastly, this upcoming release of Chrome for Android will allow you to create shortcuts to your favorite websites right from your homescreen for faster and easier access to the web. When visiting a site you'd like to save, simply select "Add to homescreen" from the toolbar menu.
Then anytime you'd like to open the saved website, just tap its icon on your homescreen. For certain websites, the shortcut will open in a full-screen experience and appear as a separate app in the Android app switcher.

To try out these features on your Android and iOS devices, download the latest releases of Chrome for Mobile coming soon to the Play Store and App Store. These updates will be rolling out over the next few days.

Chrome_32_Chrome_OS_2.

In "The Hobbit," a company of Dwarves tries to reclaim the lost kingdom of Erebor from Smaug the Terrible, a fire-breathing Dragon. While the Dwarves' quest is fraught with danger, your journey to Erebor is just a click away in "A Journey Through Middle-earth," the Chrome Experiment released a few weeks ago from Warner Bros. Pictures, New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM).

You can now follow the Dwarves' journey to Erebor and try to outsmart Smaug on your desktop, mobile phone or tablet. But it might be wise to first pay a little visit to the folks who live in nearby Thra nduil's Hall and Lake-town—locations that recently became accessible in this Chrome Experiment—just in case you need their help against the mighty Dragon.
To get ready for your journey you may want to stop by Google Play. There you'll find all sorts of Hobbit-related apps, games, books, music and films*. Together with the recent recording of a Google+ Hangout with director Peter Jackson and actors Evangeline Lilly and Richard Armitage, these can also help you get up to speed for the upcoming release in theaters of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug."

And for those of you more interested in web development than Dragon-slaying, check out the second technical case study on "A Journey Through Middle-earth" (the first one is already available on HTML5 Rocks). You can also watch a Hangout with North Kingdom, the team of designers and hackers who built it, on December 18. We'll be posting more updates for the developer community on +Google Chrome Developers.

Google's Chromium Blog just announced intentions of the search engine giant to knock out toolbars and "multipurpose extensions" out of the Chrome Web Store. The update to the policy is basically summed up as: "extensions in the Chrome Web Store must have a single purpose that is narrow and easy-to-understand." That sounds simple enough, no?
Google believes that not all extensions "have lived up to this ideal…multipurpose extensions can crowd your browser UI and slow down your web browsing – sometimes significantly."
Simple and speedy web browsing is one of the company's core principles behind the Chromium project and Chrome specifically. Unfortunately, some extension developers took advantage of content scripts and put as much UI as they wanted into an extension. To help rectify this situation Google is offering developers until June of 2014 time to redo their extensions some of which require significant changes.
It is for these reasons that we've updated the Chrome Web Store policy to enforce our original single-purpose design goal for extensio ns. We realize that this will require significant changes for some existing extensions. Some may need to be split into multiple separate extensions. Developers may need to switch to a different approach to monetization, which we've recently made easier by adding payment options to extensions. Since these changes may take some time to implement, we're not going to start enforcing the policy for existing extensions in the Web Store until June 2014. For new extensions, the policy will go into effect immediately.
This may not affect many general users of Chrome, but I'm all for a policy that works to simplify and enhance my Chrome-browsing experience.

These features aren't new, but they're pretty useful and they might help you become more productive when you download files in Google Chrome.

1. Do you want to open a file immediately after Chrome downloads it? You don't have to wait, just click the file in the download bar and you should see something like "opening in X minutes".

2. If you always want to open certain files after Chrome downloads them, click the arrow icon and check "always open files of this type". You can use this for .mp4 files or .torrent files, for example.

3. How to move to the desktop a file you've just downloaded? Just drag it from the download bar and drop it onto your desktop.

4. Some files open directly in Chrome: PDF documents, MP4 videos, MP3 songs. How to download them? Use a keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+S or Command-S for Mac. Another option is to right click and select "save as". You can also right click the link to the file and select "save link as".

5. Don't worry about closing the Chrome window accidentally while downloading some files. Chrome shows a warning: "download in progress".

6. Manage your downloads by clicking "Downloads" in the Chrome or pressing Ctrl+J (Command-J for Mac). Use the search box to find a file you've downloaded last month, right-click the URL and you can copy it, click "Show in folder" to locate the file. You can also clear all the downloads.

WORKFLOWS AND ENVIRONMENTS CHANGE, BUT A DEVELOPER ALWAYS NEEDS AN EDITOR.
One of the biggest issues I found when using the Chromebook as a development device was the lack of good offline editors. Without a stable connection in your hotel room or local café, it’s hard to rely on a cloud IDE. But a number of editors with offline support have broken from the pack and some promising new contestants have entered the arena. Though working on your latest Android app or complex Scala project is still a ways off, many of these editors should satisfy most of a front-end developer’s needs.
This short list of 5 editors is by no means exhaustive, but it collects a few of the more interesting and usable editors out there today.

Spark

There’s no better place to start than Google’s own Spark, an IDE in the early stages of development.
Spark was recently revealed and gained significant traction in the Chrome development community. The reason? Aside from the obvious win of having a Google-backed editor for Chrome, Spark also brings a large open-source Dart and Polymer project to the table. For developers curious about the Dart programming language and Polymer library, Spark gives them both a young but capable editor and a learning environment all in one repo.
Spark is limited to editing files that already exist.
Spark uses the Ace code editor – used by the Cloud9 web IDE and GitHub – and comes with syntax highlighting for most languages out of the box. The one big omission you’ll notice, however, is the lack of New File support – that means you’ll be limited to editing files that already exist. Spark comes with a handful of editor themes if you don’t like the default, but you can very easily add your own favourite colour schemes.
And that’s where Spark adds a significant roadblock: you’ll need to build it on a desktop with the Dart SDK installed. But once you get the editor built, you can run it anywhere as an unpackaged app. The one-time setup is a small hiccup to an otherwise early, but usable editor for an offline Chrome workflow. And considering Google’s commitment to making Spark an actual IDE, expect a glut of new features – and hopefully an app in the Chrome Web Store – over the next few months.

Text

text-editor-window
On the other end of the spectrum is Text, another Google project from the Chrome team.
As the name implies, it does one thing: edit text files. There are no promises of being a featureful IDE or stuffing gimmicks into the toolbar. The sidebar is hidden behind a “hot dog” icon and all you’ll find is the usual open/save/new actions and a handful of editor options.
If your needs are fairly humble or you’d rather not load up one of these heavier apps just to edit a single file, Text works extremely well. CodeMirror currently powers the app and does everything from bracket matching to code folding.
Even though Text is a fairly focused app, there’s still room to round out its feature set. For example, CodeMirror now supports autocompletion for JavaScript through Tern – a feature that would make this simple text editor far more powerful than the minimalistic interface lets on.
And one of the biggest advantages of the simplest editor in this round up: it’s one of only two editors in the list that can open files directly from the Chrome OS Files app.

Tailor

Hovering over a CSS colour shows a colour preview in Tailor.
Hovering over a CSS colour shows a colour preview in Tailor.
Tailor brings Adobe’s open source text editor Brackets to Chrome. Built with only web technologies, Brackets is a fledgling, though fast moving, editor that packs a punch with autocomplete, “inline” editing, and a layer of polish that’s hard to beat, even in an early port to a Chrome packaged app.
The “inline” editing lets you quickly edit JavaScript and CSS from where classes and functions are referenced so you can modify styles and callbacks from a single HTML file instead of jumping through every file used in your project. Visually editing CSS can also be a boon if you, like me, have a hard time translating a hex value into a tangible colour. Hovering over a colour brings up a popup that gives you immediate feedback for colours, gradients, and even transparency.
New projects can be created from scratch or existing Git repos.
New projects can be created from scratch or existing Git repos.
Perhaps the ‘killer’ feature that keeps Tailor at the top of my apps list: Git integration. Instead of trying to sync files through Google Drive and hoping you don’t lose an important edit, Tailor lets you import a project directly from Git and push, pull, branch, commit, and checkout right from the editor.
The downside is that committing is all-or-nothing and the other actions are hidden behind similarly simplistic menu items as well, so Tailor still won’t fit more complicated Git workflows. But it’s a tremendous start.
Brackets is also a fast moving project and Tailor is already several months behind. A few other projects have also attempted to shape Brackets into a packaged app, but each I’ve come across are just as outdated and none are on the Chrome Web Store.
Despite being several months out of date, Tailor is still a formidable editor that finally brings one of the most exciting open source projects – Brackets – to Chrome.

ShiftEdit

ShiftEdit isn’t technically an offline editor (even marketing itself as an “online IDE”), but there’s one particular use case where the potential for offline use comes in handy: when you need to edit remote file even with a flaky connection.

Autocomplete offers suggestions for a number of web safe fonts.
ShiftEdit ostensibly offers offline editing, but not for your local files, as it doesn’t yet integrate with Chrome’s filesystem APIs. Despite this glaring issue, ShiftEdit handles itself well when you do need to work on remote sites and dropped connections are inevitable.
Indeed, ShiftEdit was the only editor I had when I first bought my Chromebook and needed to make important changes to remote files in a busy café with intermittent wifi. ShiftEdit lets you know when you’ve gone offline and when the connection has been restored and changes can be uploaded again.
The editor itself uses Ace and has a large number of customisation options – including tab size, font size, and even support for a CSS colour picker – as well as a number of niceties like a split editor for side-by-side editing and a “Live View” to inspect HTML on the fly. But as nice as these features can be, the entire user interface can be rather unresponsive, especially on an ARM Chromebook.
ShiftEdit requires you to sign in and is the only editor in the list with a paid version that comes with revision history and Dreamweaver compatibility.

Caret

Caret took me by surprise. With over 14,000 users, Caret isn’t obscure by any means, but it did take some serendipitous searching to find this well-received and seemingly feature complete editor.
Indeed, Caret feels a lot like Sublime Text in your browser. And what’s more, it opens files straight from the Chrome OS Files app and offers the most extensive set of options I’ve seen for a Chrome editor yet: everything from fine-grained editor options to keyboard shortcuts and even macro support.

Caret uses Ace like several other editors, but with many more features already working out of the box rather than sitting in an interminable backlog. With so many obvious and hidden features, it can be overwhelming trying to find a single function in all the menus, but Caret inherits the “Command Palette” from Sublime Text, throwing every option behind a simple search box that means you won’t need to remember what shortcut you assigned to an obscure function you use only once a month.
The only downside is the lack of Git support – and considering Tailor is one of the few (if only) Chrome editors supporting it, it’s a fairly small point, but one which would make Caret even more enticing than it already is. The developer has indicated he’d prefer an “intent” system like Android to leave Git duties to an external app. Though the more generalised Web Intents API has been disabled since Chrome 24, its reappearance down the line could bode well for Git support in Caret and any apps looking to make Chrome a killer cross-platform development environment.

Get Your Dev On: 5 Offline Text Editor Apps for Chrome

Source

Text

Tailor
